If your drywall keeps cracking in the same spots, your house is not haunted and you are not imagining it. Two things do most of the damage here. First, our humidity swings hard between muggy summers and dry winters, so the wood framing expands and contracts all year. Second, freeze thaw winters keep the house settling and shifting. Add it up and drywall cracks show up in predictable places: the corners of doors and windows, along ceiling seams, and where sheets meet.
What kind of crack do you have
- Hairline stress cracks. Thin cracks at door and window corners or along seams. Almost always cosmetic, caused by normal settling and seasonal movement.
- Nail or screw pops. Little round bumps or pops where a fastener has worked loose. Cosmetic, easy to fix right.
- Water stained cracks. A crack with a brown stain or soft spot means moisture. Find the source, a roof or plumbing leak, before you patch, or it comes right back.
- Impact holes. Doorknobs, furniture, the usual household accidents. Straightforward to repair, size depending.
The DIY patch basics, and where they go wrong
A small ding is a real DIY job: spackle, let it dry, sand smooth, prime, and paint. Simple. Where DIY patches go sideways is texture matching, larger holes, ceilings, and getting a truly flush, invisible finish. A patch that is a hair proud of the wall or has the wrong texture will catch the light forever, usually right where guests sit.
What to expect

If it is water related, fix the source first
I will say this twice because it matters. If the crack or stain is from water, address the roof or plumbing source before patching. Patch over an active leak and you are just hiding it until it comes back bigger, with friends.
